Short version - HOW TO WRITE A MOVIE REVIEW - in 5 easy steps
Writing a movie review for class requires the writer to watch a film with a critical eye for the film's deeper meaning. A movie review is not just a synopsis of events; it is a look at the film's theme development, motion, and acting.
- Start with the thesis that includes the director and producer's names as well.
- Tips & Warnings for thesis development:
- Do not make sweeping generalizations about the thesis or scenes. While the review in itself is subjective and opinionated, an opinion always has to be backed up with proof.
- EXAMPLE - Gravity https://vimeo.com/34896859 Although all individuals are not necessarily destined to maintain the same station in life, many would argue that surroundings play a large part in determining how one's life evolves.
- A young woman moves through her day, going from light and easy to dark and dreary. In the opening scene...
- The idea of lightness and freedom is displayed in the opening scene when the protagonist awakes from a sleepy slumber on the beach, which is later juxtaposed against the ending where the urban walls squeeze her in and darkness overshadows the young woman.
- This film emphasizes how one's surroundings influence his or her mood and outlook on life.
Spirited Away Ebert Review - http://youtu.be/0s2Jtuz9SDI
- REVIEW EXAMPLE - Spirited Away - Master animation director Hayao Miyazaki follows up on his record-breaking 1997 opus Princess Mononoke with this surreal Alice in Wonderland-like tale about a lost little girl. The film opens with ten-year-old Chihiro riding along during a family outing as her father races through remote country roads. When they come upon a blocked tunnel, her parents decide to have a look around -- even though Chihiro finds the place very creepy. When they pass through the tunnel, they discover an abandoned amusement park. As Chihiro's bad vibes continue, her parents discover an empty eatery that smells of fresh food. After her mother and father help themselves to some tasty purloined morsels, they turn into giant pigs. Chihiro understandably freaks out and flees. She learns that this very weird place, where all sorts of bizarre gods and monsters reside, is a holiday resort for the supernatural after their exhausting tour of duty in the human world. Soon after befriending a boy named Haku, Chihiro learns the rules of the land: one, she must work , as laziness of any kind is not tolerated; and two, she must take on the new moniker of Sen. If she forgets her real name, Haku tells her, then she will never be permitted to leave. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

- Do you agree that "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" could make or break an actor? EXPLAIN
CREATE/DESIGN AN "At the Movies" program:
- Computer
- FILM or VIDEO
- Watch the film and take note of all scenes, actors and styles of direction. Watch the ways scenes are shot, including camera angles and lighting. Take note of how actors deliver the script and how the script is written. Write down ideas about pivotal moments.
Determine a thesis statement or idea. Identify points throughout the film that can prove this point. - Identify an idea or point about the film that can be expounded upon in a critical way. This is the thesis statement. Films often have an underlying religious, political or social undertone. Or, a thesis can look at why a film is or is not worthy of an award. Make notes about the way the script, shots or scenes depict characters or situations and how they relate to the thesis.
- Start the review by stating the thesis. Also write a general synopsis of the film in one to two paragraphs. Look at the major plot and introduce the main characters along with the actors that portrayed the character. State the director and producer's names as well.
- Write about specific scenes that relate to the thesis. Use dialogue from the film to make a point. Discuss how the camera angles, lighting and script all prove the thesis' statement. Each point should be written in its own paragraph, keeping the paper organized and clear.
- Summarize the main argument of the review in a conclusion paragraph. Offer a point of insight for the readers to think about. Re-read the paper to make sure that the points all flow and are related to the thesis statement. Edit the paper so that the review is insightful and all extraneous, unrelated ideas are taken out.
- Watch the film and take note of all scenes, actors and styles of direction. Watch the ways scenes are shot, including camera angles and lighting. Take note of how actors deliver the script and how the script is written. Write down ideas about pivotal moments.
